
Masuria is an ethnographic region in the North-East part of Poland, populated in the 14th – 17th centuries by the settlers from Mazovia. Geographically Mazuria belongs to the Masuiran lake distinct with differentiated relief of area and numerous postglacial lakes. Colloquial name “Country of Thousand Lakes” perfectly reflects the nature of that richest water net among all Polish region. In the Olsztyn province only there are 1003 lakes. Masuria has got the richest water net among all Polish regions. There are more than 4000 lakes there.

The biggest lakes are Sniardwy (113,8 km2) and Mamry (104,5 km2). The rout of Great Masurian Lakes is also very popular. Great Masurian Lakes are the main symbols of Masuria (88km). His country covers 1700 square kilometers and above 15% of that area are water spaces (concentrating ¼ of Polish lake recources).
Masuria is a really paradise for sailors and kayakers, and also for lovers of silence and hikes in the woods. This region is covered by beautiful Piska forest with a net of walk, bike and horse trails. Sou can visit a lot of churches and castles built by Teutonic Knights there.

Masuria is a very popular holiday region for Polish tourists so the sleeping, gastronomic and water bases are very good developed. In the bigger tourist centers (Mikolajki, Mragowo, Gizycko) In summer numerous sports and cultural events are hold.
There are a lot of picturesque and old towos In Masuria: Nidzica, Szczytno, Wielbark, Pasym, Mragowo, Pisz, Mikolajki, Wegorzewo, Ketrzyn, Olsztynek and Ostroda.
